24th Annual Midwest Book Awards Gala
The 24th Annual Midwest Book Awards honored excellence in books published in 2013 on May 14, 2014, at the Midwest Book Awards Gala held at the Olsen Campus Center at Luther Seminary in St. Paul. The awards recognize creativity in content and execution, overall book quality, and the book’s unique contribution to its subject area. The Midwest Independent Publishers Association has sponsored the book awards since 1990.
The 24th Annual Midwest Book Awards attracted 189 books, entered in 43 categories. A record 90 publishers from the 12 Midwestern states in our region (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin) participated. Some books were entered in more than one category—for a total of 363 entries.

Pat Bell Award
The 2014 recipient of the Pat Bell Award is Patricia Rouner Morris, of St. Paul, a two-term past president of MIPA and a professional book editor for more than 30 years. The award, which is presented each year at the book awards, recognizes those who have worked tirelessly to further the success of independent publishing.
The author of two nonfiction books, Pat has been a guiding light in MIPA for many years and continues to support and guide authors through her consulting firm, Book Architects.
Pat was director of MIPA’s first publishing workshop, which attracted participants from all over the Midwest and featured key speakers from the Independent Book Publishers Association. She also organized MIPA’s first Vendor Fair. Our organization is richer for her service, and we thank her for her dedication to quality publishing.
Recognition of Karen Walhof
Karen Walhof of Kirk House Press has coordinated the awards for the last four years. Now, she is moving on to other challenges. At the gala, MIPA presented Karen with an Orrefors crystal bowl in gratitude for all her hard work on the Midwest Book Awards. She has handled the awards with great fairness and wisdom: from answering publishers’ inquiries, contacting judges, and handling the logistics of hundreds of entries each year to planning the annual gala. MIPA thanks you, Karen.
Thanks to Nancy Chakrin for her wonderful photos again this year.
Entries for the 25th Annual Midwest Book Awards for books published in 2014 will be accepted starting in the fall of 2014.
